Akron, Whipp’s Ledges is an urban crag with up to 30 foot tall, high quality sandstone cliffs especially suited for face climbing. Whipp’s Ledges is in Hinckley Reservation, part of Cleveland Metroparks and has seen climbing since the 1970s. The northern Ohio climbing community is very lucky to have a jewel like this so close to home. Climbing is mostly top roping (TR), with some bouldering and a few trad (gear) routes. Whipp’s Ledges is a traditional low chalk usage area, and climbers need to practice Leave No Trace ethics. Areas under overhangs that are sheltered from rain need extra care when it comes to chalk usage. Use the minimum amount needed, and please take time to clean up before you move on to the next area. There are climbers who still want to figure the route out on their own without marks to map the way for them: please be considerate. There is a great history of climbing and bolting at the Mad River Gorge (previously Springfield Gorge) that spans many years before its official opening in 2017, but now that the CCPD owns the property, it is legal to climb here. The Clark County Park District is working on expanding the park with new land purchases in the near future, and once this occurs, it will be the largest climbing area in Ohio featuring a mixture of sport, trad, and some bouldering routes. Though a lot of work has been done to cleanup and develop proper trails at the park, there is still a lot of work to be done. The diverse property includes woods, meadows, marsh, and streams, which draws many visitors for the two prominent waterfalls at opposite ends of the trail system. The property also includes a large deposit of sandstone formations, ranging in quality from blocky loose choss in the mined horseshoe area to bullet hard boulders and outcrops. The primary rock climbing areas include the Main Rocks, the Railroad Vista boulders, and select problems in the gorge. Though primarily a top rope area, fixed lead protection is being developed in conjunction with the Ohio Climbers Coalition. Winter weather provides for multiple ice formations that can be led or top roped at the main falls and in the gorge. Though four season climbing is possible, it comes with two considerations; the wildlife preserve is a permissible hunting area for in season game and you will be the victim of unintentional blood donation during the summer months due to the plentiful mosquito population breeding in the adjacent marsh areas. Additionally, the area is bisected by an active railroad grade. Climbing areas adjacent to, or accessed by, this track, are considered trespassing and are subject to prosecution. Only toproping allowed (no bouldering or lead climbing) at designated sites along the North Rim Trail. Huge painted eyebolts at the top of all routes denote the different sites, and signs have been installed for each area. From west (parking lot #1) to east (parking lot #3) the sites are Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Black, Orange, and Yellow. Routes range from 5.3-5.12. Each site is limited to 10 people at a time. Southern aspect. Routes get a lot of sun in the winter (due to lack of leaves) and are mostly shaded other times of the year. NOTE ABOUT GEAR: All of the routes at John Bryan State Park include large eye bolts that are placed about 3-10 feet from the cliff edge. In order to set it up on top rope, it is highly suggested that you use webbing or a static line and locking carabiners to create your anchors. DO NOT USE TREES OR VEGETATION FOR ANCHORS! Also, DO NOT directly feed rope through eye bolts (this is not only bad for the rope, but also creates unnecessary wear on the bolts). They are now owned by the Columbiana County Park District. The new park is called Logtown Stone Quarry County Park, and the Park District allows climbing here. The Big Cliffs have a few trad routes mixed in with several bolted routes. Most bolts are new since 2018; as always use your own judgement when considering a route. Most of the bolted lines climb between drill marks from the old sandstone quarry. Rock is a fine-grain sandstone of very good quality, but it deteriorates near the top of the cliff. Climbers at Logtown have the support of the Village of Lisbon, which includes the Middle Cliffs and the trail to the Big Cliffs. Formerly unbolted, the Middle Cliffs now offer a handful of bolted routes and few trad lines. Setting up a Toprope from the top of the cliff can be challenging here (and is not recommended). Dirt can be knocked down onto routes below and it increases erosion. It is not recommended to set up top rope anchors from the top of the cliffs due to the loose rocks at the top 1/3 of the Big Cliffs and the steep terrain at the top of the Middle Cliffs. A competent lead climber should lead the route to the anchors and then set up the toprope if needed. Please do not top rope or rappel above the Right Wall area at the Big Cliffs. The top of the Right Wall has been fenced off to introduce vegetation which greatly reduces the amount of dirt and mud that runs down the wall in this area. It's a large, 143 acre lake encircled by over 25 miles of hiking trails. Camping, picnicking, or fishing are available. No access fee. Most of the climbing is along the lake shore about 50 feet from the water. There are lots of trees to block the wind. Most of the routes are shaded. The rock quality varies in the park, but there are at least a dozen established routes that are clean and have good quality rock. Several routes are bolted with two bolt anchors at the top, but these bolts were installed without permission from the Wayne National Forest land managers. Top roping and bouldering are allowed at Lake Vesuvius, and you can setup most routes as top ropes if you have enough rope/webbing. Great day trip if it's close by with some definite classics. Witches Front/Back and Trailer Park are the two more boulder dense areas with difficulty ranging from V0 to V7. The Ohio Climber’s Coalition approached Mill Creek MetroParks about the possibility of bouldering at the area near Bears Den Cabin. After several months, the Mill Creek MetroParks Board voted unanimously to allow bouldering at Bears Den. The following is from Mill Creek MetroParks: Bouldering (low climbing without ropes), along with bouldering specific safety equipment, i.e. helmets and portable bouldering pads, is permitted within the area encompassed by Bears Den Drive, Cross Drive and New Cross Drive according to park rules (as of November 12, 2019). As of March 2025, Mill Creek MetroParks has agreed to expand the existing Bouldering Area to include a section of rock on the northern side of Bears Den Drive, between New Cross Drive and Cross Drive. There are signs which direct climbers where they are permitted to climb. Roped climbing and rappelling are prohibited. The park has been very supportive of bouldering at Bears Den and advertises it on their website. Thank you Mill Creek MetroParks! The drive to the Mill Creek area takes you through densely populated areas. After making a few turns, all that disappears into a beautiful country setting, with parking areas surrounded by tall pines. A short walk takes you to the boulders, which get plenty of shade from large trees in the area. Thanks to the hard work of Pete Lynch and other volunteers, there is now a climber trail leading to the walls and signage along the trail to help with navigation. Located on the southside of Perrysburg, this Wood County Park offers locals in Toledo and other Northwest Ohio towns a location for intermediate/ beginner climbing. The Sawyer name comes from the original owners of the quarry business who kept the land in the family long after the mining stopped (likely during the great depression of the 1930s) to enjoy its unique potential for recreation. Climbing likely began illegally around 2008 when the land was given to the Black Swamp Conservancy and the Wood County Park District. The park opened up the walls to climbing andrappelling in 2019. There are four walls – two for bouldering (East and West walls) and two have top rope and rappelling (North and South). The bouldering walls are approximately 10 feet tall with various types of holds. The rock is solid for a quarry and provides vertical or slab climbing on crimps, ledges, pockets and horizontal cracks. The landing zones under the bouldering walls are fairly easy to protect with crash pads as work has been done to remove rocks and add gravel to flatten the trails. The bouldering can yield fun traverses and short top outs in the V0 to V3 range. The 25 foot top rope walls are mostly for instruction, but children and beginners may get their first taste of exposure as the ground disappears underneath their feet. Bring plenty of set up rope for a long anchor as the bolts are about 15-20 feet from the edge. Expect few other climbers as the sport is essentially still getting discovered by most in this area, but that could change soon! The Park requires a sign in/waiver at the kiosk near the parking area. The small area is located below the boardwalk in the Park, and is unique in the fact that you park in the city with abundant businesses and walk down the boardwalk to a great view of the Cuyahoga River and surrounding cliffs. It is hard to determine that State Route 8 is just across the river on top of the cliff. The sound of the fast water, which kayakers love, overcomes the sounds of the city. It feels like an isolated wilderness area at the base of the climbs, with the sound of the water and the cliffs rising on both sides of the river. The boardwalk also offers a view of the “Weeping Wall” which is directly across the river and is always wet. This area is also unique in the fact that the City’s Mayor contacted the Ohio Climbers Coalition (OCC) about the possibility of rock climbing on city property. Usually, the OCC contacts the landowner, and over a lengthy process, a decision is made. The Mayor, Fire Chief and his staff, and local businesses have welcomed climbing to the area. High Bridge Glens Park is open daily from 6am - 10:00pm. The park offers many activities, and as of September 13, 2023, rock climbing is one of them. The sandstone Quarry is a small area with a lot packed it. It is a great area for beginners. The easy approach involves a 250’ walk, with easy access to the top of the cliff. The rock ranges from 15’ to 25’ tall. The area has one easy rappel and one challenging rappel, neither interfere with any of the climbing routes. There is also a practice anchor station where you can safely stand on the ground and practice threading the anchor. The theme of the area comes from the children’s book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. When I try to convince landowners to allow climbing on their property, I stress that climbers are generally conservation minded. This book reminds children and adults alike the consequences of misuse and greed to the environment. Please keep this in mind when you tread to our outside areas. There are no restrooms or potable water available within walking distance of the Quarry. You can drive a short distance to restrooms at the Beach, east of the climbing area. There are also restrooms off Rock Springs Road, west of the climbing area. Beaver Creek State Park is located in Northeast Ohio at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. The wilderness landscape of the park offers rock climbing for all abilities. Get excited for a climbing experience like no other in the state. Secluded in Hemlocks with the nearby river close by, the climbing here can be described as a true gem. Climbers at Beaver Creek State Park have the support of the Division of Parks and Watercraft to climb at designated areas within the park. Currently there are two areas open, Spruce Knob and Raven Rocks. It’s best not to set up a Top Rope from the top of the cliff. If possible, one person leads the route, then sets up a top rope by attaching their gear to the permanent anchors. The rocks are located towards the top of a very steep hill. You will not realize how steep it is until you see it for yourself. Please either lead the routes or be creative with a stick clip to get to the anchors. The anchors at Beaver Creek have permanent Top Anchor Hooks (or Mussy Hooks) attached; please attach your own gear to the anchors for Top Roping. The last climber to climb the route can then either lower off(recommended) or rappel off the permanent Top Anchor Hooks and clean the route. These anchors are costly and take time to replace, please do not Top Rope directly off the permanent anchors. Restrooms are located within walking distance from the parking lot.
